Most diet programs available today could be adapted to keeping your blood sugar in control. However, you must plan your calorie intake each day to match what your caregiver has prescribed for you whether it is 1200 calories or even 2000 calories depending on your body size, gender and activity level. So to get started let's discuss implementing your sugar control diet.

Meal plan or meal planning is necessary to successfully control blood sugar while becoming healthy from what you eat. The first step is to plan your schedule for Meals. Optimal results are obtained by eating: Breakfast, a mid-morning snack, Lunch, an afternoon snack, Dinner and a "just before bedtime snack". In other words 6 "meals" each day.

Healthy dieting must include foods in proportion from all the food groups: protein, fat, and carbohydrates. These food groups include most vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts and beverages. Protein in small amounts in each and every meal and snack is required to make this sugar control diet work.

Protein is slower to digest, which keeps your metabolism working and helps prevent feeling hungry and deprived. Acceptable proteins include lean red meat, ideally no more that 3 oz.s. three times per week unbreaded fish, unbreaded chicken, raw nuts, eggs, cottage cheese and unsweetened (plain or flavored) yogurt can be used to satisfy your requirement for protein which should be 10% to 35% of your overall diet.

Dried beans, nuts and seeds can be considered protein but are sometimes "incomplete" so must be eaten with other foods so care in portion and calories is advised.

Carbohydrates includes fruits, vegetables and grains.

Vegetables: Vegetables, especially raw vegetables are your friend. Raw green and red vegetables are unlimited. Eat as much as you want at any meal or snack. Some vegetables have the reputation for burning more calories than they provide especially Celery. Lettuce, Cabbage, Broccoli, are great "treats" when combined with a homemade yogurt dip flavored with zero calorie spices from your spice rack. Cooked vegetables regardless of color and yellow or orange vegetables and potatoes, rice, bread are in the measure category: 1/2 cup equals a serving or the equivalent of one slice of bread and must be calculated into your daily calorie allowance. The exception is corn creamed or whole kernel which is 1/3 cup. Some fun recipes are available at Cararta's Facts including peanut butter celery sticks.

Fruits: Fruits include almost any fresh fruits or berries except for mango and bananas. No fruit juice...except as listed under beverages! Fresh means fresh so no canned, dried fruit. Can use frozen if no sugar added.

Grains: Some diets restrict bread, oatmeal, grits and rice however I often have a sandwich for lunch including two slices of bread, all you have to do is make sure to include these calories in your daily allowance and have a protein filling and you will be fine. The body needs a certain amount of carbohydrate for quick energy while waiting for the protein to digest. A small baked potato with 1 tablespoon of regular sour cream with dinner is also acceptable. Again just keep track of what you eat!

Beverages: Water is great!. Unsweetened tea is fine and I especially like green tea which some tout as a helper in the weight loss game. If you count the calories in the juice, you can have fresh fruit juices with no added sugar and diluted with water...half water-half juice (grape is good) but again count the calories! I love coffee, but found more than a cup per day seemed to slow down my weight loss. Your choice!

Not listed but important is fat. Every diet should include a certain small amount of fat. You can get this from lean red meat, oily fish, certain nuts, olive oil (salad dressing) canola oil...an amount daily equivalent to 3 pats of butter! Fat helps with sugar control as it's digestion takes longer than carbohydrates so it helps maintain a level sugar rate with fewer spikes and lows. Forget the fake "butters" what is in them is worse than fat!

While on the food part of this program: I personally do not like "lite" fat free, reduced fat, sugar free or artificially sweetened anything. Besides their unpalatable taste, they often contain more calories than the original because of attempts to make them"taste"acceptable. It has become accepted that some of these altered foods can cause digestive problems (diarrhea when over consumed). Decide for yourself.

Final recommendation regarding the diet part of the control blood sugar plan. There are certain supplements and herbs that can help control blood sugar. Two that I use are Cinnamon and Chromium. Do your own research or talk to a nutritionist.

Exercise: Exercise is necessary to lose weight and control blood sugar and stop taking medications. Just like the scheduled meal plan, exercise should be on the "menu" every day. The easiest, least expensive and probably the best exercise is Walking. Walking uses your whole body, especially if you swing your arms when you walk. Thirty minutes a day or the equivalent is required. Riding a stationery bicycle if you can't walk or don't have a place to walk will meet your exercise requirements. If you can't walk for 30 minutes, break it up into smaller amounts, gradually increasing until you can walk for 30 minutes.

Adhering to this diet will improve your life by improving your blood sugar level. If you are currently taking medications for your diabetes, keep a close check on your sugar levels and consult with your caregiver regarding adjustments to medications. Losing weight usually reduces blood sugar levels and leads to having more energy and less of that tired feeling common with uncontrolled diabetic blood sugar levels.

A footnote: If you are overweight or have close relatives with diabetes and uncontrolled blood sugar, there is the possibility that using this diet will help prevent diabetes or delay the onset of diabetes.

Finally follow your scheduled eating times using the correct food combinations and do a little walking and you will soon know how to control blood sugar levels without medications!

I am a Retired RN who has lived with Adult Onset diabetes for 30 years without taking medications and have outlined my diet and exercise program for reducing, controlling and lowering blood sugar levels. My site Diabetes Diet has more information to help in your quest for sugar control. In my case a 1200 calorie diet was necessary to lose weight and lower blood sugar. As I get older the exercise is required to maintain control.

My younger sister's Joella's fight with diabetes is detailed in a blog, Cararta's Facts with recipes and the ups and downs of trying to live on a Diabetic diet. She has an ongoing problem with combining the correct amount of food and exercise necessary to control her weight, blood sugar and diabetes.

I kept seeing all these ads about ketones and Raspberries....

thought it was some kind of a fad....you know here today, gone tomorrow!

Well, a few days ago, I stopped and read on of those ads,
went to Google and did a search and you won't believe....

They haven't done a large number of "Scientific Trials" or whatever, but what
they have done is let people use Raspberry Ketones with a sensible diet and
and start losing FAT like crazy!

Even Dr. Oz according to one article I was reading.

From Raspberries? Plain old fruit on the vine?

Not quite that simple, but close. They extract and concentrate the ketones from the Raspberry (it is what makes raspberries smell so good!) and you take the supplement to to Burn the Fat....cause that is what it does!...Burn the double chin, burn the fat hips, burn the fat belly.....need I continue?

Watch the video....read what the girls say about how well it works....I wouldn't have belived it.

Bet this will help with Diabetes...if you can get rid of the fat and the weight...Sugar control which means Diabetes under control.....Ya Hoo!

Until now, you'd have to eat thousands of Raspberries just to get enough of the Ketone enzyme to help fight fat, but now scientists have isolated that element and extracted it into a supplement that lets you get 300mg of Raspberry Ketone in every serving of Raspberry Ketone Max

Shared here to explain what is going on with Joella and her Fight with Diabetes 2.

Joella Update November, 2012

The last time I updated was in 2011.

Unfortunately things with Joella have not improved.

She did diet and exercise enough to lose down to 161 pounds in February of 2012.

However, as of October, 2012 when our other sister went to visit her, she was back up in
weight to 184 pounds, even though she was telling me on the phone that her weight
was 168.

She has now either disconnected her telephone or has a different number. I am no
longer able to talk to her unless she calls.

It is disheartening to think about what is going to happen to her.

As far as I know she is still taking Insulin and two oral medications to try to control her
blood sugar and therefore manage the diabetes.

It will work for awhile, but if you don't eat a reasonable diet and exercise there comes
a point where the drugs can no longer be depended on for sugar (glucose) level control.

Elevated (high) glucose readings are the indication that the body is not able to process
the extra sugar and remove it from the blood stream.

Results?
1. Nerve damage...eyes, rest of body especially arms and legs.
2, Lack of sensitivity to injuries allow injuries to not be noticed and treated.
3. Circulation: blood vessels that supply all the cells and organs become etched and plaque begins to build
up.
4. Poor circulation and nerve damage combine and result in:
5. Tingling feet and swelling....easy for sores to develop and not healing.
6. Heart attack and Strokes ...the final answer to untreated diabetes, most start because of 1 and 2 listed
above.

The last time I talked to Joella in October she said her glasses weren't working as well.
She said she might go get new ones. She got new ones in early 2012 when she had lost weight and her sugar readings were lower.....the glasses were not as strong as the old ones she replaced. So here dieting and exercising in order to get her foot sore healed paid off with better vision.

Now with the weight gain, it sounds like the improvement is gone.
Another complaint....she said, "my feet and legs are tingling again and keeping me awake at night." Her solution before was to drink milk every hour or so, all night long because it seemed to stop it.

Guess we can assume this is her same solution to the problem.
Until I manage to go see her, this is the last update I can do. No information.

There is information about Diabetes, it sysmptoms, diets and articles with helpful suggestions available at:
Only problem I see is this isn't a diet you are likely to stick with!.

Talked to her two days later and they were having Pork Chops, rice and gravy for dinner. Didn't even bother to ask where the celery and cabbage went!

See sawing, up and down with weight is probably worse on your body than just eating sensibly and not gaining if you can't lose weight.

Joella has a problem, she will diet heavy duty for a week, then go on a binge of eating and most times she gains back what she lost plus a pound or two.

It seems she has a problem with her bathing suits now....the bottoms are several sizes smaller that what she needs. I'm beginning to believe that dieting and weight loss is as much a MENTAL problem as it is a body problem. Joella commented on someone who shops all the time and said, "they love to spend money!"

I replied, "I guess it is like you. You are addicted to eating and FOOD."

She was quiet for a moment then said, "I do love to EAT! I guess if I'm going to lose weight I've got to do better at buying what I am supposed to eat instead of Pork Chops, Rice and Gravy!"

I said, that sounds good to me, but right now I have to go and feed my dogs and cats.
Will check with Joella in a day or two and see how her "new" grocery shopping went.

Making up your mind and putting a plan of action in place and Following it works with everything, not just Dieting!
Both teas come from the carnellia sinensis plant but green tea leaves are steamed rather than fermented like black and oolong teas. This prevents a powerful anti-oxidant, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), from being oxidized and therefore diminished.

Antioxidant Properties

Most of us have heard of the positive effects red wine can have on a fatty diet and its healthful benefits on heart disease. High amounts of catechins polyphenols, particularly EGCG, are present in green tea. And EGCG has twice as much resveratrol as red wine, making it a powerful weapon towards lowering cholesterol, inhibiting blood clots and negating the effects of a fatty diet.

EGCG is also used to treat diabetes and is reported to have glucose-lowering effects. In addition glucose can cause a person to feel hunger and by controlling insulin levels, you control appetite. Try drinking a mug of green tea at the first hunger pain and you are well on your way to managing your appetite.

Thermogenesis

Thermogenesis literally means heat generation. Green tea increases thermogenesis in the body, becoming a potent appetite suppressant and increasing fat oxidation, helping the body to use fat as an energy source. This means the body is preferentially burning fat over protein.

Green tea also raises the body’s metabolism, increasing the rate at which calories are burned. In a recent study, the combination of green tea and caffeine burned more calories than those given a placebo.

Add to its thermogenesis benefits, green tea also has energy-boosting properties, which makes it a perfect breakfast tea or mid-afternoon pick me up.

Other Healthful Benefits

There are many other conditions in which green tea is reputed to be helpful:

Killing cancer cells, while leaving healthy cells untouched
Treating Rheumatoid arthritis
Lowering LDL cholesterol
Preventing thrombosis which causes heart attacks and strokes
Addressing cardiovascular disease by inhibiting abnormal formation of blood clots
Preventing infection
Improving impaired immune function
Stopping certain neurodegenerative diseases (such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s)
Treating multiple sclerosis
Preventing tooth decay by killing the bacteria that causes dental plaque

When you compare the heath benefits of green tea with the harmful effects of regular and diet soda, coffee and other damaging drinks, it is easy to see why green tea has a long and successful history of benefiting the drinker.

Adding Green Tea to Your Diet

Green tea has become so popular that it can be found in mainstream grocery stores as well as gas stations and convenience stores. There are many flavors and varieties of green teas so you will be sure to find a combination of flavors you’ll enjoy.

Consider also adding green tea water to some cooked foods. Adding tea to a pot of boiling pasta will affect the flavor in a fresh new way. Toss that same pasta with pine nuts, pesto and a dash of olive oil and you have a healthful dish with many antioxidant properties. Challenge yourself to find new and exciting ways to add green tea to your diet.

This site does not give medical advise.

This book is really good.

I like that it has all of the basic
information about the Flat Belly Diet in the beginning, so if one were
to want to do the flat belly diet they really only need the cookbook and
can save money not buying the other book (which explains the diet but
doesn't have any recipes).

I have tried several recipes and they
have all been very good. I like that they are healthy recipes with
flavor and for the most part fairly easy to make. For me, personally,
sticking to the actual diet part is not easy because I think it is a
little time consuming and can be a little expensive.

But I wanted this more to understand the diet and see how it could fit into my lifestyle of eating healthy. And it does!
I would recommend this book.

It offers recipes for: breakfast,
soups & sandwiches, vegetarian, seafood, poultry, meats, snacks, and
desserts. The other thing that is great about this book is that for
each recipe it tells you how long it takes to make, how many servings,
the nutrition info (calories, protein, carbs, fat, sat fat, cholesterol,
sodium and fiber)and the MUFA (monounsaturated fats).
It also tells you for each recipe
what to pair it with to make it a "complete" MUFA meal and then tells
you the total caloric intake if you do pair it with the suggestion.

The other thing that I do like about
this book is that it offers a planned out 14 day meal plan in the
appendix and a MUFA serving chart (lists each MUFA, the serving size and
the calories).

User friendly. Good recipes. Good information.
Talked to Jo about a week ago. Said she took her "sugar" and it was 100 just after she got up that morning. Also said she was down to 168 pounds.

Bad news. Another sister went to see her three days ago, They did some grocery shopping at Publix which is near the house. I'm mentioning Publix because their stores all have these scales where you can weigh yourself.

Well Jo's 168 is acutally 184....a big difference for someone only 5ft 5 inches tall.

I have some pictures that were sent via iPhone...she doesn't look like she has lost any weight, actually looks heavier.

She is beginning to develop circulation problems in her feet and legs...and complaining that her glasses don't work right anymore. Guess that is what happens when you only use oral medication and insulin to work at controlling your diabetes instead of combining it with exercise, a good meal plan and scheduled meal times to control your sugar.

Diet and Exercise should always be your first line of defense. The drugs and insulin help to bring control, but eventually without making an effort to change eating habits the drugs can't do their job.
So many young people are developing type 2 Diabetes (formerly called Adult Onset Diabetes) mostly because of "lifestyle" eating the wrong food and not moving enough. When Teens and preteens develop Diabetes2 they seem to have a much harder time coping with it, often not successfully.
If you’re one of those people who can’t stand all the counting and tracking and adding and charting that some diets require, you could find a refuge in one simple numerical scale: the glycemic index. On the other hand, you might find it another maddening way to complicate the simple act of eating.

The glycemic index is a measure of the quality of carbohydrate foods. It’s kind of a good carbs/bad carbs thing, based on how they affect your blood sugar. Though it’s not new, it did start getting a lot of press when the anti-carb movement took hold.

It works like this: in the glycemic index, pure glucose is arbitrarily assigned the score of 100; it doesn’t mean anything in particular; it’s just a set reference point for how it has affected the blood sugar by about two hours after eating. Then all other foods in the index are given a number relative to glucose and its affect on the blood sugar.

Foods with a low index typically break down slowly and don’t cause drastic fluctuations in blood sugar. Foods with a high index typically do. For instance, green peas have an index of 39, while corn flakes have an index of 92.

Originally developed to help folks—particularly diabetics—control their blood sugar, the index includes mainly carbohydrate foods, because protein and fat don’t have much immediate effect on blood sugar.

But assigning numbers to different foods based on their glycemic effect just happens to create a scaled list of foods that ends up being a very useful tool for people dealing with obesity and other health issues, as well. That’s because simply maintaining a low-glycemic index diet tends to guide people toward healthier eating and weight loss, even when that is not their specific goal.

Consider: Type II diabetes, as well as various cancers and cardiovascular disease, are all highly correlated with high index diets. There’s abundant research that shows that reducing the overall glycemic index also reduces the risks of those problems.

That’s because almost by default, a low-index diet will include more fresh fruits and vegetables, more fiber, more dairy, all foods that offer essential nutrients, that are more likely to be lower in calories and which tend to keep the body sated longer, holding off the next hunger spell. All that usually adds up to weight loss, no matter what the program.

Proponents of the index say it’s more helpful than counting calories or grams of fats or carbs, and actually offers a simplified approach to learning to eat better, but some experts caution that people shouldn’t get too wrapped up in worrying about the precise numbers. Instead, they urge that people pay attention to whether the foods they’re eating have a low, medium or high index.

That’s because, as with any rule, there are exceptions to the fairly consistent physiological rules that underlie the index. For instance, watermelon has a pretty high glycemic index, about 75, which is even higher than table sugar. Does that make it bad for you? No . Because in spite of its high index, watermelon actually has a pretty low glycemic load. That’s a measure based on the amount of food you’d actually consume, not just an arbitrary quantity used in testing, as with the index.

The glycemic load of a food can be determined using the glycemic index number for a food, divided by 100 and multiplied times the available carbohydrate you’d eat. With most foods, low index is consistent with low load, but there are the quirky exceptions. Of course , to find them, you’d be back to doing a bunch of math again, and that’s just not the way people normally eat.

That’s why doctors and nutritional experts encourage people who are trying to develop a healthy diet to avoid getting caught up in the numbers game and look more generally at the foods in the index, leaning toward those at the low end. Anything over 70 is considered high index, 55 through 69 is medium and below 55 are foods with a low glycemic index.

And look what’s in those groups: high index foods include most breakfast cereals, white breads and other processed baked goods, most potatoes, ice cream, candies and table sugar, your veritable Atkins nightmare.

Lower index foods include cherries, grapefruit, broccoli, legumes like lentils and beans, most whole grain baked goods and most dairy foods. So even without counting calories or keeping track of specific index numbers, you can see that steering your diet toward the low end of the index is bound to do you good.

We like to encourage patients to think of glycemic index and glycemic load as just two more tools that can be helpful in developing healthier thinking and planning about dietary habits.

A final thing to remember: there’s not one standardized glycemic index list and most indexes include brand-name items that people buy on a typical shopping trip, as well as the more generic items like vegetables and fruits. This is one of the more helpful aspects of the lists, but only if you get one that relates to where you live.

If your average Southwest Florida resident looked at an index created in Australia, it wouldn’t be much help, because really, when’s the last time you had a couple Golden Pikelets with a nice glass of Milo?
She thinks I "fuss" toooo much about what she eats.
Last month I bought her another copy of the American Diabetes Associations Food Exchange Lists for diabetics. Very small, will fit in your purse so you can take it with you if you are new at having diabetes and trying to diet.

Don't really think she pays much attention to the exchange book, the diet the doctor gave her or anything else related to her diabetes treatment other than getting those pills and Insulin shots. Know for a fact that she doesn't take any of them on a schedule, just when she feels she needs them.

The problem is with diabetes, other than obvious things like always being thirsty and running to the bathroom all the time, maybe having a sore or fungus infection that you can't get rid of, or being overwhelmed with the urge to sleep if you over eat, there aren't many other Visible signs of diabetes until later......when it is almost to late.

I don't know what her criterior for Needing her medication is. Don't know what yardstick she uses to measure her Need for Insulin or Metformin or glucophage.

Said she has started to lose weight, now down under 170 pounds. Asked if she had been dieting and just got silence.....This time last year she weighed less than she does now, so the long term picture doesn't show improvement.

Guess just wait and see. If you don't diet, you can't lose weight and if you continually eat the wrong diet you gain. Simple.
This site does not give medical advise.

The Secret to Losing Belly Fat

Staying on a diet is hard work. It takes a lot of planning, preparation and ENTHUSIASM! Trying to Lose belly fat which seems to come with diabetes is always hindered by the mistakes made in how we try to lose the fat.

There is a lot of slipping and sliding involved in maintaining healthy eating habits that will promote good blood sugar control. The same habits of eating that we have developed over the years, get us to where we are now, and because they are hard to break, they keep us there.

Good Eating habits along with Blood glucose readings that should be taken as often as our health care giver prescribes are part of the plan for diet control of diabetes. . If you are taking Insulin this can be very important. I was listening to a TV programs yesterday and one of the points made was that there is a huge gap between what care givers prescribe and what insulin users end up doing. It seems that users don't always follow instructions, resulting in poor blood glucose control. I wouldn't be surprised if there is the same neglect when it comes to following caregiver directions for nutrition and meal planning.

Look around and find a program you can really live with.
Enroll friends!..Joella found a new book on diabetic nutrition and has several friends sitting around the club house pool reading it with her.
If only she can convert this new knowledge into action!!! Dinty Moore beef stew (even with added water) isn't on any diabetic diet I've ever seen even though it was on one of Jo's lists of what she had for lunch!

Good nutrition is actually just applying common sense to what you need to eat to be healthy or become healthy. The information is there. Use it.

Here is a link to a common sense program that has some of the best information I have ever seen to help you lose weight and integrate enough exercise into your routine to help you not only Feel Better but Look Better at the same time. Skinny Belly!
This site does not give medical advise.

Thought she was making great progress.

I'm afraid it isn't so. She said she had lost 4 pounds this week. I said that seems like a lot for one week. Then asked the wrong question: How much do you weight?
Her answer comfirmed my worst fears.....the 4 pounds she had just lost were 4 pounds she had put back on after losing them last month. Bought and had sent to her another Diabetes Exchange List the small one that you can keep in your pocketbook..Very handy for eating out, but if you aren't motivated and dedicated to losing weight and doing something about your diabetes it won't do much good.....just clutter up your purse.

I am beginning to think Joella doesn't yet realize the seriousness of being diagnosed with Diabetes. It is a somewhat silent disease doing its maleovent work behind closed doors until you wake up one day with a massive heart attach or a stroke..... If your arm wouldn't move or you couldn't walk because your foot or leg hurt, you would have motivation to do something RIGHT NOW to fix it.

Unfortunate.
She got her Social Security last Wednesday....when I talked to her today she was up to 186 but had lost a pound since yesterday.
I don't know the solution to her problem. We talk on the phone (I'm in Tn. and she's in Fl.) and go over what kind of foods and when she should be eating but it doesn't seem to make much difference.
She taking a course at the YMCA in the gym and said her instructor has her making a list of everything she eats....funny the Doctor can't get her to log her blood glucose readings or what she eats and when she eats, but the girl at the gym is getting a food list. Since she goes to the gym three times a week, I guess it is the personal attention from someone other than family that matters. It still comes down to this one phrase: YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT.
Joella called last night (she is my sister in Florida with diabetes if you are new), all excited because she was down to 179 pounds. I was in shock...asked her how much she weighed before and she said 193 pounds. In June she weighed in the 160's getting very close to making it into the 50's.

I don't know what happened, how it happened....well I guess I do.....don't eat the right food, don't keep to a scheduled meal time and depend on Insulin, diabeta and metformin (all three she takes) to try to keep your sugar readings low.
Don't exercise every day the equivalent of walking for 30 minutes.

She is now enrolled in a nutrition class at the local hospital. Seems excited about it, said it is taught by a nurse and a nutritionist.
As a no longer active RN I wonder what her reaction will be when they tell her the same thing she has heard from me for the last three years: Only eat amount of calories that caregiver prescribes, eat at least three meals and two snack each day, try to eat at the same time each day (called meal scheduling) include as much fresh produce in diet as possible, take prescribed meds when you are supposed to take them, check blood sugar as requested by caregiver and keep a log of sugar readings, medication taken and amount and type of food consumed and when.
At least she has dropped some of the weight. Think it made an impression on her when she sat down on the floor and then couldn't get back up. She had to have someone help her.
Even though it is positive that she has lost weight, I'm still a little down. It is the same pounds that she has lost and gained back in the last few years. Should have know when she called about the great bathing suit she found a nice 3X but bought some shorts to wear over it because the skirt (from the top) left some of her stomach bare.
Peace.
I didn't even ask what it was before. She was so excited to "get it down".

Since she lives in Florida and I live in Tennessee it is hard to get a handle on what she is really eating and doing as far as controlling her diabetes. The newest thing is that PUP (a Florida program tied to Medicare) is going to pay for her to go to a class about Food. It will be taught by Nurses and a Nutritionist.

I wonder what she is going to think when she finds out it is mainly the things that I have talked to her about for the last three years. Scheduled meal and snack times, take your insulin and/or oral medication 30 minutes before eating, stay within your calorie allowance when planning and eating meals, and most important get at least 30 minutes of exercise every day.

She recently moved, no longer has access to a pool but likes to walk and has an exercycle that she rides so doesn't seem to have a problem with the exercise part.

With the diet part of her program she has a problem. Since she likes to stay up almost all night, she really doesn't have a good eating schedule. Including fresh raw vegetables...even celery or lettuce is also a big problem. She tends to buy Plums, Bananas, Cherries and a few Apples. Occasionally Cabbage or a Cucumber will make it home, but forget Broccoli, Greens, Fresh Green Beans (she buys canned) Green Peppers etc.

You don't hurt, have a headache or aching bones.

What you might have is tiredness and fatigue especially after eating, dry mouth, thirsty all the time even though you drink a lot of liquids.
Having to urinate frequently especially at night (when you never had to get up and go before)!
Dry, itchy skin, frequent fungual or yeast infections of groin or vaginal area.

Finger nails and toe nails often become infected with the fungus because of contact when scratching infected areas.

It is a hidden disease for many, quietly damages their body until the damage becomes unmanageable.

Education and Information about Diabetes is our greatest weapon.
Find out the symptoms, read eveything that you can find out about it. One of the most visible indicators is body weight. Carrying extra pounds or a sudden weight gain or an unexplained weight loss could be an indicator.

It is worth a trip to your caregiver to find out.

A simple A1c blood test that is available in most physicians office gives a very good indicator. It only uses a drop of blood and the results are available while you are there, no waiting to send it to the lab.

Diabetes is an unnecessary disease most of the time unless you were born with it.

It can be brought on by being overweight which is often the results of continuing to eat more calories than your body needs for the amount of your daily activity and not exercising enough to burn up the excess calories you have consumed.

People often gain weight slowly without really being aware of the effects of those extra pounds on their body. Along with the symptoms of Diabetes, we develop the deadly side effects that eventually cause blindness, nerve damage, amputation of limbs, heart attacks and strokes.

Fighting Deabetes requires dedication and Education.

The only real solution to diabetes is to prevent it by healthy eating and daily activity.

Living is more fun if you have energy and can do the things you want to do. I encourage you to educate yourself, get the knowledge necessary to create a healthy diet and then add exercise to your lifestyle.

Walking doesn't require a gym or equipment and is very effective. Begin with 5 minutes several times a day if you can't do more. Work up to 30 minutes a day.

It might take awhile to implement your new lifestyle, but the results will be worth it. It is possible to control and often prevent Diabetes and its symptoms by making a few small changes in your lifestyle.

I know this from personal experience. Years ago I went on a 1200 per day calorie diet and found to my sorry (I love Coffee) that on days when I drank coffee, my weight loss came to a standstill. I've researched and can't seem to find the reason, unless the stimulation in coffee changes the metabolism so that calories are conserved instead of burned.

Even though coffee is entirely legal – as evidenced by the prevalence of coffee shops all across every town – it is a stimulant, and it is actually quite similar to a drug. Of course, coffee does not have the adverse effects on the body that many drugs have, but if you try to quit drinking coffee, you will find that the withdrawal symptoms will make it feel a lot like you are trying to quit something much harder than coffee! If you have come to the realization that you are dependent on coffee to make it through the day, and you want to break this cycle, here are a few tips for weaning yourself off coffee – without experiencing the headaches and fatigue many others experience!

Slowly cut back: By slowly cutting back on your coffee intake, you can eventually reach a place where you no longer need coffee. The first step of cutting back is to figure out exactly how many milligrams of caffeine you consume in a day; once you have come up with this figure, try to cut twenty percent off this original level of caffeine every week, until you are no longer dependent on coffee!

Find alternatives: There are certainly a lot of alternatives to coffee - but realize that this does not mean you should switch to energy drinks instead! There are plenty of foods that are “energy foods,” and once you start adding these foods to your regular diet, you will be able to cut coffee out far more quickly!

Drink water: Water is the biggest need for your body, so when you start cutting back on coffee, you should help your body make the transition by giving it as much water as you can. Water will make it less likely that you end up with those nasty caffeine headaches, and it will also help to give you natural energy.

Even though coffee is unlike a drug in that it is not horrible for your body, it is always nice to be able to have coffee as a “treat” instead of because you are dependent on it; once you follow these tips, you will be that much closer to cutting coffee off your “needs” list completely!
This site does not give medical advise.

But if you truly want to be as healthy as possible, it will be important that you make sure to eat something at the start of the day – and even if you are “too busy,” there are a lot of options for eating a healthy breakfast on the go.

If you are going to be eating your breakfast on the go, you will need food that you can take with you in the car or on the subway – but this does not just mean you have to bring a bagel or a muffin along! One of the best ways to get your body going at the start of the day is by eating fruit, as it is healthy for you and will start you off with the energy that is necessary for moving forward in your day. Additionally, you can pack food at night – food that will be healthy and easy to take with you the next day – such as breakfast sandwiches (using regular toast, or using something like a bagel or an english muffin) or hard-boiled eggs.

A lot of people also have leftovers from their dinners, but they do not think of these as “breakfast foods,” and so they leave these leftovers in the refrigerator and end up skipping breakfast altogether – but there is nothing wrong with bringing “dinner” leftovers for your breakfast! Just load some of your extra food into a tupperware when you finish eating dinner, and the next morning you will have something that is easy to bring with you and either heat up when you get to work or eat cold on your way in!
